The day has just begun, and there are already tasks piling on my to-do list for the day. So how do I find my running inspiration to get going? Believe me, it is not always easy. There are many times at nine at night I debate not running at all, but then I hear my inner voice and it gets me moving. I want to help you find that same inner strength. Even on the hardest days, I always feel satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment when I complete my run. Are you ready for some running inspiration? Follow these tips to get moving.

1. Do Not Overthink Your Running Plans

I used to rise at 4 a.m. to squeeze a workout or run in because it was the only time I had to exercise. If I stayed in bed thinking about the workout, I could have easily talked myself out of it. Of course, the warm bed was always relaxing, but I did not think any further. I would get up and just go. When it comes to your running plans, the best approach is to stop overthinking and just get out the door. To help make mornings easier, here are a few things you can prep the night before:

  • Lay out your running clothes and shoes.
  • Fill your water bottle and put it in the fridge.
  • Set your alarm across the room so you have to get up.

2. Make a Goal and Stick to It

If you have six miles down for your daily running goal, make sure you stick to your plan. Unless an injury is in your way, there is no reason to change your daily goal. I have many days when I am tired, and I would much rather run a four-mile route than the eight miles I had planned. However, I never give in to feeling lazy. We all have days where we struggle, but it is important to push yourself to accomplish your goals and kick laziness to the curb! If you need help staying on track, consider checking out some tips for creating a running schedule.

3. Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative

We can always list obstacles in life that get in the way, but if we focus on the positive, you will get so much more accomplished. Look at one major positive: you are healthy and have the mobility to run. You are fortunate, so be thankful and use what you have. A positive mindset can drastically change how your run feels from start to finish.

4. Challenge Yourself

If you always run the downhill section of the major hill on your route, I want you to switch things up and challenge yourself on your next run. Life would not be as much fun without these challenges. I promise you will feel much stronger after you complete this hill, and this will push you to find your inner strength. You might not have even known you had this within you. To keep track of how you handle different terrains, consider logging your runs.

Terrain TypeChallenge LevelBenefit
Flat RoadsLowGreat for speed and pacing
Rolling HillsMediumBuilds leg strength and stamina
Steep InclinesHighBoosts cardiovascular endurance

5. Reward Yourself with New Running Gear

How great do you feel when you wear new running clothes? A fresh pair of running shorts and a new top can help motivate you to get out on your next run. Studies on enclothed cognition show that the clothes you wear can actually influence your psychological processes and performance. Being fashionable in your fitted gear can make the experience more fun. Whether you prefer high-quality activewear from Lululemon or a comfortable pair of Nike running shoes, gear up and enjoy yourself. After all, that is one of the reasons we run, right?

6. Don’t Give Up

We all have off days when the last thing we want to do is go for a run, but it is important to accept that this feeling is completely normal. Make sure you schedule one or two days of rest a week to rejuvenate yourself. If you feel tired mid-run, push yourself to go that extra mile. I guarantee when you complete it, you will be glad you did. If you feel like your energy is dipping constantly, you might want to look into foods to fuel your run. Just never give up!

7. Channel Your Inner Sexy

Let’s face it, having the strength to go for a several-mile run is sexy. You become stronger physically and mentally as a result of your runs. You will develop more toned legs, a stronger core, and overall better fitness. So channel your inner confidence and get out for a run. I promise you that you will be glad you did it!

I will be looking for you on the roads, and maybe we can even run a mile or two together! What will your next run be? Will you challenge yourself to go the extra mile?
